METASTASIS BY XENAKIS
Poster for an imaginary event:
I designed a poster for music by Xenakis, which was intended to work as a concert poster for the series "Musica Viva" of the Bavarian Radio.
Xenakis was a Greek-French avant-garde composer, music theorist, architect, director and engineer. Among a lot of other projects, he combined music with architecture by designing music for pre-existing spaces and designing spaces to be integrated into specific musical compositions and performances.
Among his most important works is Metastasis (1953-54) for orchestra. This piece consists largely of strings playing very flat and as if fanned out. While listening to the piece, I was struck by the connection to a light sketch Xenakis made for the Polytpe de Montréal. There, you can see a fan-like arrangement of delicate lines. In my opinion, this sketch visualizes the piece Metastasis with its volume and dynamics so well that I designed my poster for it and, in keeping with Xenakis' way of working, transferred the sketch into a spatial structure made of paper.

TYPOGRAPHIC VISUALIZATION OF "ALEATORIC"
"Aleatoric" as a term of music describes works that are open in form in that the musical realization is left very much to coincidence (thus also called "compositions of coincidence").
The composer provides only very general guidelines or inspiring graphics and the musician is ultimately the person who determines how the piece is played. Each time, the outcome is different.
In order to reflect the random principle of aleatorics, I worked analogically and put a glass of water over the printed word "Aleatoric" and took some pictures of it. Through the movement of the water during this process, the result was different each time. The water is thus to be seen as a metaphor for the musician.
This series of the three posters is my final result of visualizing the term "aleatoric". Three different posters with the same fundamentals.
